I’m so excited to share this tutorial with you! It’s your favorite goofy LEGO mini-figure in shirt form, Emmet. His face is so iconic and different than the standard mini-figure face; his sideways smirk was just calling to be put on a bright yellow shirt. Between prep, painting, and dry time I cranked out this shirt in under an hour. A DIY LEGO Emmet shirt just in time for previewing the LEGO Movie 4D: A New Adventure at the recently opened LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Arizona.

All you need are a few supplies to make a fun shirt your kids will love. In fact this same technique can be applied to so many different LEGO characters. I see a Wyldstyle shirt in my future, and maybe a Unikitty for dad ;-).  Little brother even got his own Ninjago shirt.

Supplies:
yellow shirt
freezer paper
black fabric paint
paint brush
Cricut

Directions: (Can be done with or without an electronic cutting machine. See step 1 directions in italics for print and cut method.)

Upload and set your canvas to t-shirt.  This will make it easy to determine the size of your stencil.  I also measured the spot the print would go to make sure it would fit.  Leave a border around the edge to be ironed for a crisp print.

Place freezer paper on your cutting mat with the paper side down. Set your machine to light cardstock and make sure to mirror your image before cutting.  Printing Directions: Cut a piece of freezer paper to letter paper size (8.5’ x 11”). Feed into ink jet printer so image prints on paper side. Size image in word processor to fit on a paper, print. Cut out stencil by hand.

First place a piece of wax paper in between the shirt to prevent the paint from seeping through to the back of the shirt.  Place your stencil on your t-shirt shiny side down.  Iron stencil onto the shirt with a medium setting.

Start applying fabric paint in an inward motion.  You want to make sure to go away from the stencil so paint does not seep under the paper.

Allow the paint to dry a couple minutes before peeling the paper off.

Emmet was the perfect companion to bring along with us to the newest LEGOLAND Discovery Center at Arizona Mills Mall. Opening today at LEGOLAND and Discovery Center’s across the country is an all-new immersive video experience. LEGO Movie 4D: A New Adventure is a fun installment with your favorite LEGO Movie characters: Unikitty, Emmet, Wyldstyle, Iron Pirate, Metal Beard and Lord Business.  Stay tuned for more LEGO crafts, DIY’s, and a video review of the newest LEGOLAND Discovery Center.
