Who’s counting the days down until Fall? Sure it doesn’t officially start until September 22nd, but that doesn’t mean you can’t begin enjoying the taste of Fall now.  This is officially my favorite time of year.  As it doesn’t really cool off until well until October, sometimes November for us in Arizona, I soak up any opportunity to bring fall early at home.   Like buying M&M’s® Pecan Pie and making delicious fall treats!

There are no leaves changing to mark the season here, Cactus don’t have a dormant state.  Fall begins when the sun starts to dip in the sky a little earlier, and the evenings begin to cool off.  It’s a time when sweaters get moved from the back of the closet and the AC isn’t running 24/7.  Heck, we might even crack a window or leave the front door open.

For me though fall is officially marked by the changing of seasonal displays.  When the aisles turn from back to school to autumn colors, tastes, and scents.  It’s is my favorite time to try out new recipes and fall flavors, like pecan pie.

In the past I’ve been intimidated by pecan pie.  I’m not a big fan of pie crust, and the thought of baking with corn syrup scares me.  When I spotted M&M’s® Pecan Pie at Walmart I was inspired to go a little untraditional and reinvent pecan pie.  This recipe is simple and pulls together easily with ingredients you have right in your pantry and fridge.

Who wouldn’t love a personal handheld pie.  The crust is moist and almost resembles a dense cake, thanks to a little Mott’s® Applesauce and Pillsbury™ Moist Supreme® Cake Mix.   The filling is thick and requires no corn syrup.  The addition of the M&M’s® Pecan Pie give it a little chocolate and maple flavor.  Then, top it off with homemade caramel apple.

Did you know you can make a caramel like syrup with just a little butter and Snapple® Apple?  It is the perfect fall flavor to take these pecan pie bars over the top.

A fall favorite in handheld form. These pecan pie bars have the same rich flavor with an added crunch and sweetness. The M&M's® and homemade caramel apple bring this treat to another level. #bakeinthefuncontest

Ingredients

  • Crust:
  • 1 15.25 oz. Pillsbury™ Moist Supreme® cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 c. applesauce
  • 1/2 c. M&M's® Pecan Pie
  • Filling:
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 2/3 c. brown sugar
  • 2/3 c. honey
  • 2 tbsp. heavy cream
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 c. pecans
  • 1/2 c. M&M's®
  • Caramel Drizzle:
  • 16 oz Snapple® Apple Single
  • 1 tbsp. butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°
  • Mix together cake mix, applesauce, and egg in a medium bowl. Add M&M's® and stir.
  • Transfer batter to a foil lined 19"x13" baking dish. Bake 15-20 minutes until edges are golden.
  • While the crust bakes combine butter, brown sugar, honey, and heavy cream in a medium saucepan.
  • Simmer mixture for 1 minute. Remove from heat, add vanilla and pecans.
  • Pour warm mixture over baked crust. Sprinkle with M&M's®.
  • Bake for an additional 15 minutes. The filling will firm up and continue to cook after removing from the oven.
  • While the bars cool add Snapple® Apple and butter to a small saucepan.
  • Low boil the mixture on medium until the mixture thickens. Stir continuously once the mixture starts boiling to prevent burning.
  • Using a fork drizzle the hot caramel over the cooled bars.
  • Place the dish in the fridge for 1 hour; this will make it easier to cut. Remove from fridge 30 minutes before serving and slice.

Notes

For a crumbly cookie crust add less applesauce.

Right now save $1 on your favorite M&M’s® for the season.  What kind of fun would you bake up with harvest M&M’s®?

These look like one of those things I would hide from my children in order to eat the entire pan myself…

I might have caught my husband doing that with the last bar.
