Cereal is our family’s go to snack food, though we eat it more without milk in our house than with.  On its own or thrown in a trail mix it is one snack I don’t mind the whole family munching on.

I was inspired by the recipe on the back of the Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran box to think outside the bowl.  While cereal and milk is still a yummy staple, we love using it so many different recipes; both savory and sweet.

This weekend my oldest joined me in the kitchen to mix up a batch of this filling apple pie trail mix.  A delicious mixture of Cracklin’ Oat Bran, walnuts, apples, yogurt covered raisins, and apple pie seasoning.  While my son certainly enjoyed prepping it, this is an elevated snack mix perfect for on the go moms and women too.

In a small microwave safe bowl mix together the applesauce and coconut oil, melt on medium-high in the microwave.  Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

Break the freeze dried apples into bite-sized pieces.  In a large bowl let the kids mix together the Cracklin’ Oat Bran, walnuts, and apples.  While a spoon definitely will work for this, hand mixing works well with the kids. It helps to keep more inside the bowl; not to mention so much more fun!

Spread mix on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes until mix starts to brown.  Cool on a rack lined with wax paper.

Once the mix cools add the raisins and store in an airtight container.

Cracklin’ Oat Bran is the ultimate compliment to this recipe; packed with golden oats, flakes of coconut, a sprinkling of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg.  AND between the cereal (4 grams/serving), walnuts, and yogurt covered raisins you’ve got a great source of protein and the perfect hearty snack.

It’s time to think beyond cereal and milk!  Checkout the great selection of Kellogg’s cereals at Albertsons, and grab some more inspiration for creative breakfast and snack creations here.  I’d love to hear how you’re putting a spin on cereal and taking snack time and breakfast up a notch.
