Captain America released to DVD this past Tuesday (9/9), and to celebrate we hosted a fun superhero soiree.  Here’s a peek into the perfectly red, white, and blue celebration with Captain America food, fun, and decor.  There’s even a great cookie shield M&M recipe.

I’m so excited how the Captain America party came together.  Everything was so simple to create.  Some items were upcycled or items we picked up inexpensively while we were out picking up M&Ms at Walmart.

The table is a simple white plastic table cloth with butcher paper overlay.  The little blue half circles I upcycled from our game toss cutouts.   The backdrop is blue butcher paper with a simple book page garland.  The printer was the most high tech and involved part of the decor, with several new printables you’ll be able to grab later this week.

Let’s talk food. I used the red, white, and blue theme to plan everything around.  No fancy cooking here, just cut, assemble, bake or use store bought cookies.  The simple presentation of the food made it exciting for the party guests to enjoy.  Shield sandwiches with PB and blueberry or strawberry jelly and white and blue corn tortilla chips with salsa were a hit for the kids and the adults.

I also made a fruit platter with yogurt dip.  It was a lovely centerpiece and addition to the tablescape.  It didn’t hurt it was made of the kids’ favorite fruit: strawberries, blueberries and bananas.

The cookies were so simple too.  I bought packaged cookie dough.  Baked them in rounds, topped with red and white frosting.  The final touch was one blue Jumbo M&M.  I let the white “M” act as the star.

After they fueled themselves the little superheroes were ready for training camp.  They tossed, threw, and even smashed their way through an Avenger style obstacle course, but first they had to get ready and dress up in their favorite costume.

The first activity they did was an Avengers’ Throwing Practice.  I used our $1 game toss and added a fun twist with Thor hammers and Captain America shields.

Next, they let their inner hulk come out and smashed their way through an evil forest of cake cones.  I think this might have been a favorite.  A little messy, but totally worth seeing their little green hands pulverize mini cake cones.   I wish I would’ve put down a plastic table cloth, though to catch all the flying bits of cone.

The last game we played was Pin the Star on Captain America’s Shield.  We might have had a peeker that totally cheated, but he was quite sneaky about it.  No hard feelings and I got a great picture of his reaction when his deception was revealed.

Each child went home with their own Captain America costume complete with a shirt, shield, and mask.

We don’t do themed playdates all the time, but with just a little bit of planning we have a fun memory with our friends and some great games and dress-up for future gatherings.  It’s not uncommon though for our family to celebrate the release of a favorite movie with a themed night.  And don’t forget when the kids go to bed and you sit down to enjoy Captain America to grab a movie night in a jar.
