THE SWEETEST LITTLE PINOCCHIO!

Along with my Pinocchio costume, I’m sharing 88 more really awesome handmade costume ideas from talented bloggers everywhere!

My son had his very first dance recital this past June.  He’s the only boy in the studio so I received the fun task of creating his costume.  His group danced to “I’ve Got No Strings” from Pinocchio.  Naturally being the only boy he got to be Pinocchio.  With a few shortcuts and up-cycles we ended up with a fairly adorable costume.

Supplies:
yellow shirt
white shirt or fabric
blue satin
black shirt
gold decorative ribbon
red fabric
blue decorative ribbon
mustard felt
blue satin ribbon
fabric stiffener
red feather

Directions:

Lederhosen– Unfortunately my camera card had a little melt down with my photos on it for this portion of the tutorial.  I used shorts to create a template for the bottom part.  Next I measured my son to determine the length of the overall portion.  My final template included the shorts and extended overalls.  I followed this tutorial for cutting and assembling the lederhosen correctly.  Finish with a decorative blue ribbon trim along the sides.

Vest–  This is as simple as doctoring a black t-shirt.  Start by shortening your shirt, removing the sleeves, and cutting a slit down the center.  Curve the end of your middle slit.  Finish by sewing (or fabric glueing) a gold trim around the outside of the vest and sleeves.

Hat– This was a first for me; and quite simple, I see a few more hats in my future.  Start with an egg shaped piece of fabric.  Setup a frame to stretch your felt over.  I found a colander that fit my son’s head perfectly and one of those disposable cardboard shoe  trees to make mine.  I covered the whole thing in aluminum foil to hold it together and saran wrap so it would release easily.

Fold your hat by pinching at the top and folding the felt inward.  Sew a seam along the fold, creating a shallow cone.

Dip your fabric in stiffener.  Stretch your fabric over the frame and secure with several rubber bands.  Allow your hat to harden to the touch (follow the manufacturers suggestion for drying time).  Cut and remove any excess fabric. Finish with a trim of blue satin ribbon and a red feather in your cap.

Collar–  The pattern for the collar is a simple u-shape.  Measure the neck of your yellow shirt to determine the size of your collar.  I used a pattern like this one and shrinked it down to my needed size.  Cut out your collar and attach to the neck of your yellow shirt.  Again you can stitch on or use fabric glue.

Tie–  Cut a rectangular piece of fabric 3″x18″.  Fold in half with the wrong side of the fabric facing out.  Sew the two long sides closed.  Flip your fabric inside out so the right side is facing out now.  Fold the tube of fabric in half again and sew the ends together.  Adjust the fabric tube so the seam is in the middle back.  Fold your fabric in half length wise (hot dog fold).  Hold the fold, then take the top of each side and fold back against the fold.  Secure by wrapping thread around the middle a few times and tying a knot.  Take a 1.5″ wide strip of fabric and fold the raw edges under.  Wrap around the center of the bow and secure with a few stitches.  Fluff the tails of your bow-tie.  Attach the bow to the center of your yellow shirts neck, right where the collar meets.

An easy low-sew Pinocchio costume.  The whole family does themed costumes like Jake and the Neverland Pirates last year.  Check back later to see how Jiminy, the Blue Fairy, and Geppetto turn out.  Wish me luck on those endeavors.

Handmade Disney Pinocchio Costume
The whole family of course had to get on the fun.  Dad dressed up as Geppetto, little brother was Jiminy Cricket, and mom went as the blue fairy.  These costume were a little less involved using some store bought clothes and handmade accessories.

DIY Pinocchio Family Halloween Costume
Geppetto

Brown or black pants, gray button up shirt, brown vest, gray wig and mustache, and a simple belt made from fancy ribbon found in by the yard section at the local craft store.

Jiminy Cricket

Tan pants, white button up shirt, black tails (borrowed ours from a Mickey Mouse costume), quick vest made from burnt orange satin, a cravat made from golden yellow crinkled silk, and a quick DIY top hat made from blue felt and a strip of satin ribbon.

Blue Fairy

I used this pattern with a blue satin for the dress and a white organza for the sleeves. Then added a pair of blue wings.
