Sunscreen is something that my family takes very seriously.  Our pale skin and red heads make us more vulnerable to the dangers of the sun.  Many of the women in my life have been affected by skin cancer.  They grew up in a time when tanning oil was the way to go and sunscreen wasn’t taken seriously.  This very reason is why both my husband I lather up ourselves and the kids anytime we are going to be in the sun.

When our family began to detoxify our home we realized our next steps after food and household cleaners was personal care.  What goes on our body is just as important as what goes in.  Whole Foods Market carries a huge line of mineral sunscreens that meet their whole body quality standards.  Here’s your guide to sunscreen this summer.

The local event I attended opened my eyes to sun care and I learned a few things too!  Here’s my favorite take away points.  You can see the printable guide above for more information on sun safety.  Click for a 2 page PDF for more information.

UVA (ultraviolet aging)- These sun rays can cause cancer and premature aging of the skin.

UVB (ultraviolet burning)- The sun rays we tend to protect ourselves from that cause burning and cancer.

Physical vs. Chemical- Physical sunscreens reflect the suns rays with minerals.  Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin, this is why they take 15 minutes to become effective.  Physical sunscreens are ready at the time of application.

We’ve always used the EWG summer sunscreen guide when selecting one with the least toxic ingredients.  Now I know Whole Foods makes it easy selecting only the best sunscreens; they do the work for us.  Our family is loving Goddess Garden Organics.  I received a sample of the spray for water at a local event.  There was no sunscreen haze and subsequent coughing.  It was thinner than other mineral sunscreens I’ve tried.  It was difficult to spread those thick screens on my kiddos and I love that there is a spray available that’s organic, physical protection, and my kids don’t mind holding still for me to apply and reapply.  They have a whole line of sun care created by a mom for her daughter.
