Our family is slowly purging the chemicals from our life to switch to a toxic free home. The last to go are some of our soap/detergent products like shampoo, conditioner, and softener. Going eco-friendly isn’t always economical, but this is one solution that definitely saves the pocket book. Woolzies dryer balls are the Natural Fabric Softener, made of 100% pure New Zealand wool. They are guaranteed to last for 1,000 loads! For our household that equates to about 2.5 years. That’s 8 loads a week of clothing and cloth diapers. Another cost saving measure? They reduce drying time by 25%. I’ve eliminated putting the dryer on for a quick touch up when that towel or pair of jeans isn’t quite dry.
The first question everyone in the house wanted to know, is it safe for people with wool allergies or sensitivities? Here is what we discovered. I started with a clean lint trap and dryed the balls in an empty dryer, the lint trap came out clean.
On our first load of cloth diapers I did notice some shedding. All loads after the initial one have shown no signs of it; wool appears to be virtually lint free. The wool sensitive family members have had no complaints of irritation. I’m a complete convert now. The dryer balls leave our cloths, towels, and diapers soft and fluffy. They don’t smell like april showers, but they do smell fresh. If you have to have fragrant laundry a little essential oil will do the job without the use of artificial fragrances.
