Straight Talk on Straight Teeth: 15 Foods that Agree with Invisalign

05/29/2014

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Disclosure:  This is a sponsored conversation with Invisalign.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

If you’re like me you grew up in the era of braces.  Braces weren’t something to be embarrassed by, they were a rite of passage.  You displayed those puppies every single time you switched your band color.  From matching your favorite sports team, to the fun glow in the dark bands, that metal mouth was worn with pride.  That is until a bracket rubbed your cheek raw, a wire popped or you ventured into the territory of forbidden foods.

That’s right, that huge list of foods your orthodontist handed you and took you on honor you would steer clear of.  Let’s be honest most tweens and teens are not good patients.  We do our best, but BBQ’s, movies, and parties call and we have to have that corn on the cob, popcorn, or caramel.  I’m busting that myth tonight.  Braces do not translate to forbidden foods.  With Invisalign and Invisalign Teen you can enjoy your favorites without limit.

The following information is for traditional braces only.  Feel free to skip to the next section for Invisalign.

Messy- These foods won’t damage your braces, but do a great job at getting stuck in your wires and brackets.

      1. corn on the cob
      2. popcorn
      3. white bread- no seriously, especially hot dog buns and super pretzels.
      4. pretzels
      5. licorice

Sticky- Makes cleaning a big chore.

      6. caramel
      7. fruit snack
      8. gum
      9. jerky
      10. taffy

Crunchy- Your wires and brackets are no match for these foods.

      11. hard candy
      12. ice
      13. nuts
      14. apples
      15. carrots

You may enjoy all these foods and more with Invisalign; just remove your aligners.  Invisalign Teen provides a great alternative to traditional braces.  The clear aligners do the straightening without all the wires and brackets.  Eliminating the need to restrict your diet, emergency orhto visits, and the awkwardness and fear associated with playing sports and instruments.

Having experienced the traditional braces journey I was excited to hear about this option for pre-teens and teens.  Often comparable to the cost of braces Invisalign Teen is a great alternative.  The alignment journey on average for an adult is 12 months, children can vary depending on the complexity of the work needed.  Just as with traditional braces movement can happen post treatment so a proper retainment plan is important.  I have experienced a lot of movement over the past couple decades due to a lax post-treatment plan with an orthodontist.  That was on traditional braces.

My best friend and I sporting our braces smile just months after getting them installed. The later pictures show us pursing our lips to cover them up in photos.

It’s important to note not all orthodontists specialize in Invisalign.  It might be a good idea to get a second opinion to ensure you are receiving all the important information to make an educated decision.  Use the find a doctor feature to locate an Invisalign Teen/Invisalign orthodontist near you.
