Greetings Mom’s and music lovers. You may notice that this is not Kelly writing for Eclectic Momsense, but rather her husband JD. I am so excited to be a guest blogger this week to share a musical app that I think is a fantastic exploratory tool for children and young students.

I have been a life-long student of music.  I have a bachelors in music education and percussion from the UofA.  Served as an orchestra, choir, mariachi, and percussion teacher, managed to sneak in my Masters in Music Ed., and now teach music and choir in Deer Valley Unified.

Like Kelly, I am a devoted parent to our sons. I enjoy experiencing new technology and music with the boys as much as possible. The app Mibblio is an interactive music app.  It allowed my three and a half year old son Aiden and I the opportunity to engage with musical story telling, improvisation, and basic music technology.

There are 4 parts to the app.

  1. This illustrates the action of the story being sung and shows the lyrics for the child/students to follow along with.

  2. The accompaniment is broken down into several tracks. The user can elect to play all of the tracks or limit to a few or zero selections. Options such as drums, bass guitar, piano, clavichord, and rhythm guitar are given. Eclectic Momsense- Interactive music app for iPad endorsed by music educator.
  3. The bottom of the screen features a keyboard where users can select a number of software instruments to play along with the track, ranging from piano to accordion.

  4. Users can scroll through several string instruments and percussion combinations on the right side of the app. Children can choose stringed instruments ranging from harp to ukulele and can either strum chords or pluck individual strings. Small hand percussion can be chosen in groups of three instruments and triggered to create additional rhythms. Eclectic Momsense- Interactive music app for iPad endorsed by music educator.

Pros:

  1. Users can improvise with a number of software instruments in a musical environment that changes to match the tuning and key of the main musical melody.
  2. Most musical decisions by the user will sound pleasant to the ear based on the intelligent listening of the app.
  3. Several exploratory areas make this app great for multiple users.
  4. There are many combinations and textures to explore on many different software instruments.

Areas for Improvement:

  1. There is no way of following or tracking the lyrics of the song for young children. I would appreciate a scrolling bar so students would be able to track the progress of the song.
  2. An option to have the music show in standard musical notation would also be appreciated.

Disclosure:  I was compensated for this post.  All opinions are reflective of the guest poster, however, he’s my husband so I endorse everything he says. ;-)
